A Private Faith Matthew 6:1-18

Pastor Matt Webster

Sermon Notes

*Secret Acts of Mercy (v.2-4)

*Secret Prayer (v.5-6)

Further Teaching (v.7-15)

*Secret Fasting (v.16-18)

Further Reflection:

1) What are some ways we are tempted to perform good works for the approval of others rather than out of genuine love for God? How can we ensure that our good deeds are done for God’s glory rather than for recognition? Reflect on ways to keep your motivations pure.

2) Reflect on the three spiritual disciplines Jesus expects from His disciples (giving, prayer, and fasting). Would you describe these as flourishing in your life? What could be the next step in cultivating them more deeply?

3) Prayer is at the heart (structurally in the center) of the Sermon on the Mount, demonstrating its immense importance. We demonstrate our reliance on God by seeking Him in prayer. What jumps out to you in the Lord’s Prayer? How does the Lord’s Prayer reflect the Gospel in terms of relationship with God?
