For further reflection:

1. Read Matthew 9:10-13. What did Jesus tell the Pharisees to go and learn?

What does empathy and mercy have to do with Jesus’ caution to us in Matthew 7:1-2?

2. Jesus spoke repeatedly about spiritual blindness. In John 9:41, Jesus tells the Pharisees they are blind because they claim to see. What do their claims have to do with the log and speck metaphor Jesus uses in Matthew 7:3-5? How would you assess your eyesight?

3. Read Proverbs 4:11-13 about the “way of wisdom.” How is Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) something to treasure, to “keep hold of” and to “guard”? What might this look like in your relationships with others who have disdain for the Way of Wisdom? (See1 Peter 3:14-16)
